We have a two part class this month. First we will finish our Secret Belgian Binding books. Then we will start our next project—an Exposed Spine Journal with Sewn Over Paper Tapes. Suzanne will be leading the Exposed Spine project.
For the Secret Belgian Binding, please bring:
- the cover you sewed together in January
- the final end papers that will cover the inside stitches
- your signatures
- image for the front cover (optional)
- the template you used to punch the holes in the cover
- the sewing thread we passed out in January
- a needle for sewing the signatures
For the Exposed Spine Journal we will supply the book board, linen sewing thread, and Tyvek. For this book please bring:
- 2 pieces of decorative paper, 9″ x 7″ (grain in long direction)
- 1 piece of decorative paper, 4″ x 8″
- the piece of Tyvek that was passed out last month (extras will be available)
- a pad of 60-80 pound drawing paper for making signatures (Blick or Strathmore Series 300, 11″ x14″ recommended; check your Michaels or Joanns coupons)
- 9 pieces of light weight card stock or decorative paper for signature wrappers and end papers, 7 1/4″ x 10 5/8″ (grain in short direction)
Your tool kit should include:
- Self-healing cutting mat
- Craft knife
- Ruler at least 12” long, preferably a See-thru type
- Mechanical pencil
- Glue stick
- PVA or Tacky glue
- Glue brush (around 1” flat)
- Container for water to clean your glue brush
- Baby wipes or paper towel for glue clean-up
- Scrap paper such as newsprint or a catalog for use in the gluing process
- Bone folder
- Awl
- Punching cradle or a large catalog or phonebook to use as a makeshift punching cradle
- Small scissor
- Book binding needle with hole large enough to accommodate the waxed linen thread
- Corner cutting guide (optional)
- Bulldog clip
We will again start at 12:30 so we can try to get lots crammed into our session. To make best use of our time, PLEASE have your signatures for the Belgian Binding cut, folded and pressed under weights before we meet. And have your cover paper or book cloth cut to rough dimensions. If time permits, we will tackle the signatures and wrappers for the other book. Hope we see lots of you for this jam-packed session.
