Leslie Fox: “West and Central African Textiles with a Focus on the Democratic Republic of Congo”
Please join us Thursday, May 11th at 12:30 pm at Shepard Garden & Art Center for refreshments and general membership meeting. Following the meeting Leslie Fox will present “West and Central African Textiles with a Focus on the Democratic Republic of Congo”.
West and Central African textiles are some of the most unique textiles in the world. From Fulani Marriage Blankets to Malian Mud Cloth, Sierra Leone Tie-Dye and Congolese Shoowa tapestries and skirts, they are all made from a range of different indigenous and organic materials and demonstrate a complexity in design and thought. The purpose of this presentation is to provide a taste of these different African textiles to those whose passion is textiles.
Mr. Leslie Fox has spent the better part of 50 years working in the field of international development, largely in Africa but also in Asia and the Middle East. His work was largely with United Nations organizations such as UNICEF and UN Women, International Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) and various US agencies working internationally, including the Department of State and US Agency for International Development. Much of this work involved facilitating the development of strategic plans particularly as relates to promoting good governance and democratic practices. In addition to the collection of African Textiles during his time overseas, he also collected items of traditional use (stools, pipes, fly whisks) and a range of different masks
This is a general membership event so admission is free to members of SCTA (and Weavers & Spinners) or $5 for guests.
